How to Add and Edit a Company
Keep the businesses you sell to in one list: add a company, get a warning if it may already be there, and see how many deals are open for each.
A company is a business your team deals with, and the people at it are your contacts. The Companies page lists them all and is where you add one, change one or delete one you no longer need. This guide walks through each of those.
In this article
- Open CompaniesChoose Companies in the left menu. If you do not see it, your role does not include it, so ask an admin. The page is titled Companies, and the line above it reads CRM, then Companies.
- Choose New CompanyChoose + New Company at the top right. If you have no companies yet, the empty list offers the same button. The New Company window opens.
- Type the Company NameThe Company Name is the one required field. If you leave it empty and try to save, the window says that the company name is required.
- Read the same-name warningWhile you type, the window looks for companies that already have the same name. If it finds one, a note appears under the name: a company with this name already exists, check it is not the same one, and you can still create this as a separate company. If there are several, the note gives their number instead. It shows up to three of them, each with the city, the owner and the date it was added, and an Open link that opens that company in a new tab. The note only warns. It never blocks you from saving.
- Fill in the detailsEverything else is optional: Industry, Phone, Website, Email, City, State, a tax id, Type, Company Size, Annual Revenue, Legal Name, Time Zone, Domain, Owner, a Description for internal notes, and billing and shipping addresses. The label of the tax id follows your workspace's market. Which fields you see depends on your workspace, because an admin can hide, require or rename them.
- Create the companyChoose Create Company. The button reads Saving while it works. If the same-name note did not show while you typed but the company turns out to share a name with one that exists, a window called Company created shows the warning once and you choose OK. Choose Cancel to close the window without saving.
- Edit from the rowChoose Edit on the company's row. The same window opens, titled Edit Company, with one more field, Parent Company, where you can pick another company or leave it on No parent company. Change what you need and choose Save Changes. You can also click a value in the table to change it in place, if your role may edit.
- Read the open deals countThe table shows how many open deals are linked to each company. The hint on the column explains that the number counts every pipeline and every owner, so it can be higher than what you see on the Deals page.
- Delete a companyChoose Delete on the row. A window called Delete Company asks whether you are sure, naming the company, and checks for linked deals and contacts. If none are linked, it says so and offers Delete Company to confirm. If some are linked, it says how many are still linked, asks you to reassign or remove them first, and offers only Close.
A few things worth knowing
Each row has quick actions for Email and Call when the company has an email address or a phone number. They open your own mail or phone program.
The people at a company are added on the Contacts page, and the guide on adding and editing a contact shows how to link a contact to a company. If you already have a list of companies in a spreadsheet, the guide on importing from a CSV file brings them in at once.
What you can do on this page depends on your role. This guide covers the Companies list and its windows. It does not cover the page that opens when you click a company.
